Tuesday, June 2, 2020 Myth: Love makes the world go ‘round.

Scripture: Genesis 1:1-5

Today’s myth is that old saying, “Love makes the world go ‘round.” It’s been the subject of many songs and poems, from the musical Carnival! to Jennifer Lopez. It’s a lovely idea, but is it Plausible? Does Love, indeed, make the world go ‘round?

The earth turns on an axis, which is an imaginary straight line between the earth’s north and south poles. And the earth orbits the sun, based upon the pull of gravity and the power of inertia. These are scientific facts that are, honestly, way beyond my own understanding. But they are true. So, if the myth said “gravity and inertia make the world go ‘round,” the myth would be Confirmed, or at least Plausible. But Love? Love making the world go ‘round seems like it would easily be scientifically Busted. Except.

Except, that God created the universe to work the way it does. All the science we know about how the earth revolves and orbits – God made all that. And it all started here:

Genesis 1:1-5 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

1 In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, 2 the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. 3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

And Why did God do all that? Because God wanted a Creation to Love. God made all we know and all we study and all that is beyond our knowing – so that God could Love Creation beyond our understanding. So, while the saying “Love makes the world go ‘round” may not necessarily be intended to talk about God’s Creation, in truth, when we think about God’s Creation, this Myth is CONFIRMED!!
